Lore & Background
The album's title came from Haruomi Hosono's 1970s album *Hosono's House*, which Styles discovered during a trip to Japan. The initial idea was to make an acoustic EP recorded at his own house, but the concept evolved into a metaphor for the inside of his mind. Styles explained, 'It was much more of an internal thing… a day in my house, what do I go through? A day in my mind, what do I go through?' The album was largely written and recorded during 2020 and 2021. 'Boyfriends' was initially written during the final week of *Fine Line* (2019) recording, and 'Little Freak' was also written in 2019 during a trip to Tokyo. 'Late Night Talking' was the first song written for the album sessions, created the day Styles and his team arrived at Shangri-La studios in Malibu. 'Music For A Sushi Restaurant' was written early in the process and originally considered as the album title after Styles remarked in a sushi restaurant that one of his old songs was 'strange music for a sushi restaurant.'
In Their Own Story
The album was announced on 23 March 2022 with a 40-second trailer showing Styles stepping onto a theatre podium while a 'house façade' rose near him. The audio was later revealed to be a backwards version of the closing track 'Love of My Life'. Joni Mitchell, whose 1975 album featured a track called 'Harry's House / Centerpiece', tweeted that she 'love[d] the title'. On 15 April 2022, during his Coachella headlining performance, Styles performed 'As It Was' live for the first time, along with two then-unreleased songs: 'Boyfriends' and 'Late Night Talking'. One month before release, the album was reportedly leaked on Twitter in its entirety, and Sony publicly condemned the leak. On 26 May 2022, Styles and James Corden filmed a music video for 'Daylight' on *The Late Late Show*, visiting an apartment belonging to some fans.
